UNE Nursing Student
This is my cousin Josie Heath. She is a nurse at Maine Med in Portland. This image really encapsulates the job of being a nurse. Even though she had to wear all the protective gear because of COVID-19, she was just as excited to do her job and had the best attitude about it. I strive to be as dedicated to my job and as excited about being a nurse as her.
When I annotated Ellen Kennerly I mostly had questions about the laws because it was the beginning of the text and she explained and elaborated more after the first few pages. For the two TED talks from Jennifer Goldbeck and Finn Lützow-Holm Myrstad, I made notes about what topics they were discussing. I mostly highlighted parts of the texts that interested me and that I maybe wanted to write about. The annotations helped keep my thoughts organized about each text and it helped me find good quotes to put into my essay.
My peer review partner was Amy Crawford. We decided that we would use the peer review guidelines from the first learning styles project. Her comments were really helpful and made me realize that I need to expand more on my opinions about why consumers should have more control over their own data. She also advised that I should use some more quotes because I only had one in my first draft. After reading the comments I also realized that I need to work on my transitions between my paragraphs and expand more in my introduction and conclusion paragraphs. There is nothing really else that I wish I had more feedback on because she gave me feedback on everything and it was really helpful.
The targeted peer review that focused on MLA corrections and wording issues helped me a lot. I liked focusing just on MLA corrections because working with a partner and looking in the Seagull book helped me learn more about MLA rules and helped me fix my paper. I also like checking my paper for wording issues and focusing on the local revisions in class.
Big organizations and companies are using consumer data to exploit their customers and make money from the data. Consumers should have more control about what happens with their data.
I am thinking about doing a podcast for my final project.
(First Main Idea) Not only are big companies selling consumer data to third parties, but the companies are also getting hacked for personal information of the consumers.
(Evidence of 1st) Kennerly: Credit reporting companies, yahoo, uber, target, etc are getting hacked and personal info is stolen and can be used for identity theft and they are not letting the consumers know.
(Evidence of 1st) Fresh Air podcast: hackers are watching everything you do on our computers and tracking everything because we just always click the agree box without actually reading it
(Second Main Idea) Big companies track our online searches without out consent so they can perform target advertising and get paid for it.
(Evidence of 2nd) Goldbeck: Social media companies and scientists keep track of everything we search for online so you get specific advertisements.
(Evidence of 2nd) Kennerly: Verizon wants to expand digital advertising opportunities and continue to sell consumer data including browsing and app usage data to advertisers and third parties.
(Third Main Idea) (Naysayer) There are a few areas in which people using consumer data may be less shady and helpful to the consumer.
(Evidence of 3rd) Kennerly: Timothy Carpenter was found guilty of involvement of 6 Michigan robberies because they used his phone records to trace his location.
(Evidence of 3rd) Goldbeck: People might say that target advertising helps them find products that they need easier.
After listening to the podcasts, the Ted Talk, and looking back on my diary post, I started thinking about how much my iPhone keeps track of my every movement online. In the Ted Talk Curly Fry Conundrum by Jennifer Goldbeck, she talks about how there are scientists who can figure out everything about you just by your activity online. I have seen social media use this because once I just went online looking at the Crocs website because I was thinking about purchasing a new pair of Crocs. I was just looking at the different color choices online and then after a little bit of that I just shut my phone off. A little later that day, I went on facebook and saw about 5 separate ads for Crocs in my newsfeed and it creeped me out a little. Then I went onto snapchat and there were more ads about crocs. Those social media apps took my google search engine information and used it to give my targeted ads for the things they knew that I wanted to buy. That is so scary to me because it all happens behind the scenes and we as social media consumers have actually no idea how much we are being monitored every single second.
Before we had done projects 1 and 2 I feel as though I was not really sure how to peer review. In high school I did it a little bit, but we only were told to focus on local grammar and spelling revisions and nothing else. Using the peer review guide sheets on projects 1 and 2 have helped me so much when trying to figure out things I should be looking for to comment about. While doing the peer revision for project 2 I felt way more comfortable than when I did it for project one and I made some really good comments. I feel way more comfortable helping and giving suggestions about good global changes or just looking at the paper in a more global way. I am really happy with the results from learning this because I feel more confident in my ability to give good constructive criticism which is really important in everyday life.
My day starts when I’m turned on and all of the notifications on my lock screen are read. Usually when I am unlocked, the weather is checked first. I hate how I am shoved into a pocket, and then shoved up against a door. The door always makes a loud beeping sound right in my speakers. I hear this beeping a lot because I think I have a room key in the pocket on my back. I am always carried around and never left, or forgotten, because of the key. During the day I sit in a dark pocket or back, but at night I am always out or in a warm hand.
I have so many social media applications and games. Other phones are jealous of me sometimes because there is so many fun things to do when you are bored. My person must be bored a lot because she spends a lot of time switching from games to many different social media applications. She communicates with a lot of people from home and people here at UNE.
My favorite thing about myself is the thousands of pictures that I store. I have about 3,000 pictures and I love every single one of them. The reason that I have so many is they are all special in their own way and can never be deleted. There are pictures of people, scenery, and animals. Mostly pictures of cats though; those are my favorite.
When working on MLA and surface level conventions in class today, I focused on fixing run on sentences. I made run on sentences into separate complete sentences and added commas if needed. I read through sentences checking to see which parts of run on sentences were independent clauses. The independent clauses were turned into their own sentences. I also worked on getting rid of unnecessary words that were just complicating sentences, instead of adding to them. These surface level revisions will help the reader be able to read through my paper more smoothly, and not get hung up by small mistakes.
I chose the sticky note pre writing activity because when I met with Professor Gennaco for my conference, she explained how this strategy would help me organize my thoughts. I used one sticky note for my main argument. Then for my 3 claims, I put the claim and below that I put where I located evidence of my claims in each source. I also found that my last claim is the naysayer of my second claim. This post it note strategy was a new one for me and I really enjoyed it. It helped me be able to move my claims around and really figure out what order was the best for my essay. I will probably use this for every future essay.
I struggled with the chunking method at first because I was having a hard time figuring out what the main claims were and how the evidence followed. After reading for a little bit the claims became clearer because it was what I was focusing most of my attention on. Soon it because way easier and the claims would pop out and the evidence clearly followed. I don’t usually think about claims and evidence when I am just reading a piece of writing but it helped me understand what Greenfield was saying and her reasoning behind it. The pros were understanding the piece deeper and learning more about the structure of writing and the cons were how it look me a little while to get used to this way of annotating (that is to be expected though). Overall I think I ended up liking this way of annotating the most, which surprised me a lot because I really struggled at first.
