[Topic] In the article, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Nation?”, Twenge discusses how teenagers in the generation iGen have grown up depending on technology and it has negative affects on their lives. [Restriction] These kids have spent their time growing up with the tv on, being photographed by their parents constantly, and getting their own technology at an early age. [Evidence] My parents had flip phones, then blackberries, and then eventually iPhones and I saw how handheld technology completely evolved and changed throughout my life. [Analysis] I saw my parents depend more and more on technology as I grew up. I grew up influenced by that and when I got my pwn technology it became a big part in my life like many other iGen teenagers. I feel as though we as a generation do depend on our phones for things like our morning alarms, for directions, and for all of our communication. [Conclusion] Todays teenagers are very reliant on technology and it is because they get up learning from their parents about how technology can be important in everyones daily lives.

These quotes from Boyd address how adults view social media, how identities can change on social media, and how teens today use social media.
“Unfortunately, adults sometimes believe that they understand what they see online without considering how teens imagined the context when they originally posted a particular photograph or comment. The ability to understand how context, audience, and identity intersect is one of the central challenges people face in learning how to navigate social media.” (page 30)
“Although Turkle recognized that a person’s identity was always tethered to his or her psyche, she left room for arguments that suggested that the internet could- and would- free people of the burdens of their “material” -or physically embodied- identities, enabling them to become a better version of themselves.” (page 37)
“Many teens today go online to socialize with friends they know from physical settings and to portray themselves in online contexts that are more tightly wedded to unmediated social communities.” (page 38)
When I was at home this weekend I decided to do my 15 minute quiet reflection. I was in my room and I was home alone. It was midday and it was sunny out and good weather. As I sat there I thought about how nice it was to be home and have some quiet time for myself which I don’t usually get when I’m here at school.
I was thinking about Turkle’s views about how we as a society are addicted to out phones and to technology and I did have a strong urge to check my phone and text people back. I also was thinking since I was sitting there and doing nothing that I wanted to watch some Netflix instead. But I really sat there for the 15 minutes and thought about some things in my life instead of giving in to the technology cravings. I thought about which places in my room that I needed to spend some time cleaning because some German exchange students would be staying in my room in the next few weeks. I planned out what had to be cleaned and how I would do it. I also decided that I would condense my clothes into just a couple drawers to give the exchange students some empty drawers for their clothing.
Sherry Turkle is a psychologist and has already done a TED talk before about technology. Although when she did one before technology was in a much different place where online chat rooms existed and people were just beginning to stray from desk top computers. Turkle’s main argument is that we as a society are getting too involved into our mobile devices. Her evidence is that she surveys and studies people and she’s finding out that people are texting during board meetings, funerals, family breakfast and dinner and many other things.
My view, however, contrary to what Turkle has argued, is that technology allows people at a distance to connect as though they were right next to each other which is uniting the world in a new and unique way. It might seem like we are becoming more distant from the people around us, but in reality we are just becoming closer to people who are not with us at the moment.
Although, I do agree with Turkle that people sometimes prefer to have conversations over text instead of in person because it allows someone more time to think about exactly what they want to say without the pressure of having to say it immediately. Online communication is a way that people can communicate without being nervous about the person being right in front of them waiting for a response.
You used way too many filters, everyone knew that you weren’t really tan. Also, the colorful borders around your pictures did not add anything to the duck face selfies.
My process for the podcast started with figuring out Audacity and Sound Cloud. I had to use the resources posted on our class website to figure out how to edit the recordings to make them sound better, to cut pieces out, to add music, and to mess with the volume settings. I used that knowledge that I gained from reading the resources and applied it to my podcast editing. For the script I really looked at the rubric and came up with important questions that were in the rubric and that I answered in my essay. I used those questions and turned it into an interview type podcast. I had my mom interview me about my learning experiences and just condensed my answers into shorter more concise paragraphs that were originally from my essay. I liked the result because I had never done any sort of audio editing online before so that was a learning curve for me but I like that I have that under my belt now and I understand how to do it.
It took me about three and a half hours to do everything involved with the podcast. It took me about an hour to learn how to use the software and get it downloaded and to make a Sound Cloud account. It took me about an hour to listen to other podcasts and figure out what elements I wanted to have in my podcast to make it more interesting. Then it took me about a half hour to script my essay with the questions and the answers from my essay. Lastly, it took me about an hour to record my essay and get it all edited.
When constructing my essay, I first met with Vic because I knew that I usually struggle with creating outlines. She helped me figure out what my thesis statement was and helped me figure out what things I really wanted to explain in my body paragraphs. I used the two prewriting activities, cluster and timeline, which helped me brainstorm specific learning experiences that I have had and helped me pick which ones were the most important and the best examples to put into my essay. This was much different than my usual steps because I never do any pre writing activities and I struggle with deciding what to put into my outline. The pre writing activities really helped me figure out what I was going to specifically be writing about. The writing strategy that was called the web I did not do because I knew that I wasn’t specifically going to be talking about one person that helped me in my learning experiences because I was going to be talking about multiple people. I am really satisfied with my final draft because I spent a lot of time editing my draft and made it the best that I could make it.
When we actively read the texts from Bain and Dweck we were trying to understand what the different learning styles were and what they meant. With our reflective learning essays, I feel as though we analyzed the information from Bain and Dweck about different learning styles and mindsets before we even knew that we would have to write a paper on it. Then everyone evaluated which aspects of the learning styles and mindsets we have experienced in our pasts. After figuring that out, we all created a paper explaining our experiences and comparing it to the pieces of writing. The podcast was also a creating piece because we used the essay that was already created to make something completely new.
Baby Talk: Decoding The Secret Language Of Babies by Hidden Brain
https://www.npr.org/2019/09/30/765855335/baby-talk-decoding-the-secret-language-of-babies
In this podcast the reader discussed how babies learn and communicate. They used a lot of music and background music to captivate their audience and make it so it wasn’t just voices that the listener hears. They also played a lot of baby talk to explain how the babies communicate. They added a quote from a woman but she read the quote which provided a new voice in the podcast. The background music was varied and changed every few minutes and added to the variety of noise. They also added in the interview style and interviewed a woman that worked at a daycare and experienced how babies and toddlers communicate. A Beauty and the Beast song was added in which was cool to listen to because I knew the words and made the podcast more interesting.

I liked that we did a self review before the peer review because it helped me really look at my work and see it broken up in sections of the different topics that I wrote about. I have never really done a self review before and just relied on the comments of my peer reviews. Looking back on my work helped me have a better outlook on my peer review comments because I was already thinking of changing some of the same things that my peers suggested to me.
With the peer reviewing I liked having the structure to leave comments because sometimes I struggle with finding things to comment on. The structure for peer reviewing served as a good reminder on the things we are supposed to be commenting about.
