Some safety concerns that were noted for the patient were increased chances of a respiratory infection due to adverse effects of sertraline and nexplanon which was concerning due to the patient already having asthma. Another safety concern was that the medications all had side effects of headache and dizziness so the patient is at an increased risk for these side effects and should be educated about that. A safety concern that did have to do with the age of the client was that she is in her child bearing years and all the medications prescribed to her are cautioned or contraindicated to take during pregnancy and lactation so the client needs to consult a doctor before becoming pregnant to see if she can continue those medications.
The patient was well educated about why they take all the medications that they do and was able to verbalize the purposes of the medications. This is important because patients should not be blindly taking medications because that can lead to increased chances of adverse effects occurring if the patient does not take the medication correctly. Some client education that would be important was about the risks of keeping medications in cars. Since we live in Maine the outdoor temperatures fluctuate greatly and these extreme temperatures could change the effectiveness of the QVAR inhaler and mess up the administration from the inhaler if it gets too hot or too cold in the car. The inhaler could also be potentially stolen from a vehicle if it is left unlocked. It would be safer for the client to keep their inhaler in their bedroom with their other medications since most of them are taken in the morning and at night as well.
